Organizational citizenship behavior for business success

Figure 01

Organizational citizenship behavior was first defined by Dennis Organ in 1988 as “an individual behavior which is not rewarded by a formal reward system… but that, when combined with the same behavior in a group, results in ineffectiveness.”

Employee acts and behaviors that aren't part of their formal job description are referred to as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). It's anything employees do voluntarily to help their coworkers and the company as a whole. Employees are neither obligated to participate in OCB as part of their job duties nor is it included in their contractual obligations

Employees in organizations must therefore exhibit discretionary behavior to attain organizational goals in the quickest time possible. Discretionary behavior is also known as organizational behavior.

The term "citizenship behavior" refers to an occurrence in which an employee goes above and beyond the call of duty without anticipating any sort of compensation or return. In organizational behavior, discretionary behavior is a key component (Chiang & Hsieh 2012). Recently, businesses have begun to attribute their success to the contributions of their employees. Organizations cannot succeed without motivated and industrious people. Furthermore, the failure of an organization's employees to carry out their assigned activities above their employers' expectations results in typical organizational growth rather than organizational success.

Benefits of OCB

·         OCB can boost employee morale

·         It increases people’s levels of work meaningfulness.

·         It is good for employees' performance and productivity.

·         It creates better social interactions between employees

·         It reduces stress

·         It creates a sense of community among employees

·         It is good for your Employer's Brand

Many organizations, on the other hand, regard OCB as minor voluntary gestures by employees that don't always count. They have undervalued these modest behaviors of employees in the organization, and many organizations do not value them. Employees who perform duties that are not formally needed have a significant impact on the organization, and many organizations that engage in this strategy have found success. Behind the success of an organization are the employees working in it. Because organizations pay less attention to this, employees are sometimes unwilling to undertake things that are not their assigned tasks.

Employees are no longer motivated solely by the potential for financial gain, but rather by the joy and fulfillment they derive from their work. As a result, organizational civic behavior or employee informal acts are required. This could aid in the organization's existence, as well as its image and acceptance in society.

Many successful businesses use OCB because it helps employees work more efficiently. Most businesses are now aware of the relevance of OCB and are focusing on it. With so much competition in the business world, it's critical to think outside the box and positively engage people. When it comes to establishing organizational citizenship behavior, it's critical to change the culture of the company. Employees should get the impression that their employers care about them and are paying attention to them.

Conclusion

Employees that feel confident with their existing employer will provide their best effort, which may go beyond their given tasks. Employee behavior and performance are crucial to a company's success. Corporate Citizenship Organizational goals and success are aided by behavior.
